As a college student in the late-1980s, Scottish-native Andy Smith couldn’t get enough of his weekend job in a quirky Edinburgh wine-store. Honeymooning in Sonoma, he and Karen quickly decided their future lay in vineyards and winemaking. They quit their jobs and comfortable city lifestyle and with backpacks in tow they spent five years “following the harvest” between New Zealand, Australia and Northern California.

Working for an eclectic range of star producers from Dry River, Littorai, Havens, Franus, to Matua and Mt Pleasant, Andy went on to graduate in viticulture and enology from Lincoln University in Christchurch, NZ.

But his passion for Sonoma Pinot Noir was kindled early on, and after a spell as Paul Hobbs’ Assistant Winemaker, Andy joined DuMol for the excellent 1999 vintage – a combined 1,500 cases of Dutton Ranch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Growing this tiny winemaking venture over the past seventeen years into a world-renowned Russian River winery remains incredibly exciting and rewarding. In 2014 Andy was able to utilize his fifteen-year Napa Valley Cabernet consulting experience to craft DuMOL’s first set of single vineyard Cabernet wines.

Each year he strives to grow the finest wines possible from our collection of special vineyard sites.
