Fall Release Ryan Pinot Noir
2006

Winemaker’s Notes

2006 saw the latest harvest on record at Widdoes vineyard in our ongoing twelve year love-affair with this unique property. The harvest was delayed, not because the fruit struggled to ripen in the cool harvest conditions, but because each time we walked through the various sections of this north-facing slope, one could sense the building subtlety and nuance in the fruit, while sugar and therefore alcohol levels remained static in the cool Indian-summer conditions. The result is our most feminine and seductive Ryan bottling yet; one that effortlessly blends the complex wildflower and underbrush notes so typical of the site, with a fruit purity that is hard to resist. A small portion of sinewy Calera selection from Sundawg Ridge brought some added definition to the wine's back end and a flush of acidity to lengthen the finish. Longtime customers who remember our 1998 RRV Pinot may note similarities in the fruit tones and long subtle finish these two distinctive wines share. A charming and succulent wine, it will drink beautifully on release, but has the site-derived density and inherent concentration to mature and develop positively in bottle for up to ten years. I would not be afraid to open this new vintage before the more muscular 2005 bottling, which has firmed up since release and really needs a year or two of further maturation to unwind.

Bright, medium-red color that darkens with aeration. Expressive aromas of sweet kirsch, spicy cola and peat smoke that typify Widdoes vineyard. Lush and seamless entry balances tart plum and penetrating sweet black cherry flavors. Palate remains supple and vibrant as the naturally plush and sweetly textured extract unfolds, offset by fine velvety tannins. Finishes with a subtle note of sandalwood and tea leaf. Aging potential of between 7 and 9 years. Serve at 60 degrees.
