Special Release Sonoma Coast Mencía
2021

Winemaker’s Notes

Without question, this is our finest Mencía yet—the greatness of the 2021 overall vintage is readily apparent. In comparison to Pinot Noir, the wine is defined and driven by tannin instead of acidity and this allows the deep texture of the wine to dominate. The level of fruit succulence here is quite dramatic. The grapes themselves are firm and plump with snappy skins and real chew. And in our sandy soil and foggy climate, the crop can hang long on the vine without producing too much sugar or alcohol. This is a delicious version of an intriguing and hyper-local Iberian red grape and wine style. We love it.

Deep dark purple fruit aromatics: bramble, sweet cassis and blackberry. Complex notes of cocoa, licorice and crushed stone add detail. Floral notes—violet and lilac—bring lift. The palate is generous and layered throughout with natural juiciness and energy. Supple broad tannins fold into the wine’s succulent fruit core and the wine finishes with menthol and thyme flavors. Serve at 62F and drink between late-2023 and 2026.
