Fall Release Hoppe-Kelly Vineyard Lia Viognier
2003

Winemaker’s Notes

Our second Viognier bottling builds upon the 2002 release and reflects nicely the strides we made with this vineyard block over the growing season. The vines were pruned back hard in early 2003 leading to stronger overall canopy growth on this extremely stressed hillside site. The natural berry size is significantly smaller than other Viognier sites we have seen and reflects the tough conditions these vines must endure to produce their moderate yield. What results is fruit bursting with natural exuberance and density yet with a profound sense of minerality derived from the slatey, rocky hillside soils.

Our 2003 Viognier is a richly aromatic, floral-scented wine of honeyed peach, exotic passion fruit and zestier grapefruit. These seductive flavors continue on the palate with fresh apricot, honeysuckle spice and tighter minerals. Despite plenty of palate weight this bone-dry wine has a precision of flavor and balanced structure that ensures a refreshing and lively finish making it an excellent food accompaniment. Drink over the next two years at 50 to 55 degrees.
